Bending Dies

Bending dies are specialized tools used in sheet metal processing, primarily paired with press brakes to transform flat sheet metal into parts with various angular or curved shapes (e.g., U-shapes, V-shapes, or multi-angle bends).

Core Components

  • Punch: The upper component that applies downward force to the sheet metal. Its shape (e.g., acute, obtuse, or rounded) determines the inner angle and finish of the bent part.

  • Die: The lower component with a groove (die opening) that accommodates the punch and sheet metal. The width of the groove and the shape of its cavity directly influence the bending accuracy and quality.

Working Principle

When the press brake operates, the punch descends and presses the sheet metal placed on the die into the die’s groove. The sheet metal undergoes plastic deformation under the force, conforming to the shapes of the punch and die to form the desired bend.

Key Characteristics

  • High Precision: Designed with tight tolerances to ensure consistent bending angles and dimensions for mass-produced parts.

  • Versatility: Different punch and die combinations can handle various sheet metal materials (e.g., steel, aluminum, copper) and thicknesses, as well as diverse bending requirements.

  • Durability: Typically made of high-strength alloy steels (e.g., Cr12MoV) to withstand repeated mechanical stress and extend service life.

Common Applications

They are widely used in industries like automotive manufacturing (for chassis and body parts), electronics (for enclosures), construction (for structural components), and HVAC (for ductwork).
